HENDERSON FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO A COMMERCIAL FIRE

Henderson, Nevada -- At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 1st, 2009, Henderson Fire Department units responded to a report of a commercial strip mall on fire at 11041 South Eastern. This is located at Eastern and Sunridge Heights in the Anthem area of Henderson.
A passerby noticed black smoke coming from the back of the “I Love Sushi” restaurant located in the end occupancy of the single story strip mall. The restaurant was not open at the time of the fire. The first fire unit was on scene in approximately 4 minutes to find white smoke and water coming from the doors at the back of the structure. Fire crews forced entry into the business and found a fire in the kitchen and fire sprinklers activated. The fire was declared out within 2 minutes. There was significant water and smoke damage throughout the restaurant. The restaurant has been closed due to the fire. The other businesses in the strip mall were not affected and did not receive any damage.  There were no injuries to fire personnel or civilians.
A total of 35 personnel from the Henderson Fire Department responded to the blaze, including five engines, two ladder trucks, two paramedic rescues, and two chief officers. A fire investigator, City building inspector and the utility companies were called in to assist with securing the business.
The cause of the fire was accidental in nature caused by the storage of combustibles too close to cooking equipment. Damage is estimated at a minimum of $50,000.
For additional information, please contact Battalion Chief Matthew Morris with the Henderson Fire Department at 303-8058.
